About Us

Discover Volt Young Company

Volt Young Company is a new, exciting part-time theatre school in London, created for young people aged 8–18 who are passionate about performing. We provide high-quality, regular training and high-energy holiday intensives across musical theatre, dance, voice and acting, with a focus on developing young performers for both stage and screen. At Volt, we believe great training should be challenging, inspiring and, above all, fun. Our classes are designed to build confidence, develop individual talent and give young people the skills, discipline and creative freedom they need to grow as performers.

Our teaching team brings together a wealth of professional experience, including work across the West End, theatre, film and the wider entertainment industry. Our staff are trained, DBS checked and committed to creating an environment where young people can learn, take risks, make mistakes and discover what they are capable of. Alongside our regular teaching team, we invite guest teachers and industry professionals to work with our students throughout the year. These can include West End performers and leading creatives, alongside specialist practitioners delivering workshops in areas such as comedy, film acting, physical theatre, audition technique and screen performance. This gives our students the opportunity to experience different teaching styles, meet working professionals and explore areas of performance beyond the traditional theatre-school classroom.

Volt Young Company is about developing young performers as individuals, not simply teaching them routines. Whether a student dreams of performing on the West End, working in film and television, joining a professional production, or simply wants to become more confident and creative, we want Volt to be a place where they can grow. We encourage our students to be bold, curious, generous and fearless to support one another, embrace the challenges of performance and celebrate what makes each performer different.

What is Volt Young Company?

Volt Young Company is a professional-focused performing arts company for young people, providing high-quality training in acting, musical theatre, singing, dance, voice and speech, and performance for stage and screen. Our aim is to give young performers the opportunity to Train, Perform and Shine in a supportive, ambitious and professional environment.

What ages do you accept?

Students are placed into one of three Companies according to their age, Junior Company, Middle Company and Senior Company. We take students aged 8 all the way up to 18 years.

What does Volt training involve?

Volt provides a broad performing arts education covering musical theatre, acting, performance for stage and screen, dance, singing, voice and speech. Students don't simply learn individual skills, they learn how to bring those skills together as performers.

Is Volt a theatre school or a performance company?

Volt is designed to combine the best of both. Students receive structured performing arts tuition while also being given opportunities to perform on stage and work in front of professional cameras. We are first and formost a training provider, but we structure the classes like that of a performance company, giving students a real insight to the world of performing and led by industry professionals.

What makes Volt different from other performing arts training?

We put a strong emphasis on professional preparation.Students don't only rehearse for a show. They learn how performers actually work, including performance discipline, working with others, performing for an audience and adapting their performance for the camera.

Do students get to perform in front of an audience?

Yes. Live performance is an important part of Volt. Students have opportunities to take their training from the studio into live theatre performance.

Do students get to work in front of professional cameras?

Yes. Screen performance is an integral part of Volt training. Students learn how to perform specifically for camera and gain practical experience working in front of professional filming equipment including RED, Arri and BlackMagic Cameras.

Do students train for both stage and screen?

Yes. Stage and screen performance are both central to the Volt programme.Students learn how performance changes depending on whether they are performing to a live audience or to a camera.

Does my child need previous performing experience?

No. Previous experience is not essential for joining a Company.

Is Volt suitable for students who already have professional experience?

Yes. Our training is designed to challenge students at their individual level and help experienced performers continue to develop.

What standard of training can students expect?

We aim for a high professional standard throughout Volt. As students progress through the Companies, expectations increase and the training becomes more demanding BUT IS ALWAYS FUN!

How many hours of training does each Company receive?

Between 3 - 5 hours per week depending on the group and more during holiday intensives.

What happens during the weekly three-hour session?

Students work across the core Volt disciplines, including acting, musical theatre, singing, dance, voice and speech, and performance for stage and screen.

Will students perform regularly?

Performance is a major part of the Volt experience. The exact performance schedule will depend on the programme and productions being undertaken.

Does my child have to audition to join Volt Young Company

No however when and if you and your child are ready to move up to Volt Pro, an audition is held in front of our senior teaching team however this is very relaxed.

Who is Volt Pro for?

Volt Pro is for students who want an additional level of challenge and are ready to undertake more intensive, professionally focused training.

Can I pay for the full year upfront?

Yes. We can offer a full-year upfront payment option as well as the standard rolling option. We do not charge for school holidays unless you have signed up for our Holiday Intensives.

What happens if I am struggling to make a payment?

We encourage parents to speak to us as early as possible if they are experiencing difficulties so that we can discuss the situation. Ultimately, we put students first and we will work on an individual basis in these situations.

Does Volt have a uniform?

Volt students have a simple uniform designed to create a strong sense of identity and community while allowing freedom of movement. We require that students attend classes in at least a Volt Signature t-shirt (they will be entitled to one free t-shirt upon joining) but parents may wish to purchase further student gear on our website. If students choose, they may instead or as well wear a Volt Hoodie or Sweatshirt which is recommended during the colder months.

We also recommend students wear comfortable trousers for movement and dance activities, as well as trainers or jazz shoes.

For safety reasons due to the nature of our work, jewlery and watches are prohbited during classes.

What should students bring to class?

Students should bring their usual training essentials, including appropriate footwear and a drink.

How often will students perform?

Performance opportunities will take place throughout the year, with the exact schedule depending on productions and projects. The production schedule is announced at the start of each term by the Artistic Director.

Will students perform in professional theatres?

Volt is committed to giving young performers genuine theatre performance experience, including opportunities to perform in professional-standard venues where appropriate.

Will students appear on screen?

Screen performance is an important part of the Volt programme, and students will have opportunities to work in front of cinema grade cameras.

How do I apply to Volt?

Families can complete the Volt application form and follow the joining process provided by the company.

What happens after I submit an application?

The Volt team will review the application and contact the family with the next steps.

Can parents stay and watch classes?

No. Sadly we do not allow parents to remain on site during classes. This for one presents a safeguarding issue for us as we require that all adults in the room during classes are DBS checked and safeguarding trained with us. It is also our experience that this does not work in the best interests of the students themselves.

Can parents speak to the teaching team?

Yes. We encourage appropriate communication between parents and the Volt team.

What happens if my child is nervous or lacks confidence?

Confidence is something we actively develop. Students are encouraged to grow at their own pace while being challenged to step outside their comfort zone.

What if my child wants to pursue performing professionally?

Volt is particularly suited to young people who want serious performance training and to perform professionally.
